ANGIRA, the Greek word for anchor was the symbol of the great diplomat, statesman and ethnarch — Eleftherios Venizelos. He was a leader in Crete’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. Our grandfather served as his bodyguard and hence witnessed Venizelos’ greatness firsthand becoming a loyal supporter to the point that he would campaign on his behalf yelling through the streets and at public gatherings ANGIRA! ANGIRA! Soon our family’s nickname became ANGIRA.
