Palate

This vintage produced fruit of exceptional varietal character and intensity, with an extremely intense color, and a fragrant, perfumed nose and aroma. Consistent, yet unique, the style of the 1990 Opus One offers an approachable, accessible character. There is an intense, richly cassis-like quality laced with spicy, peppery licorice overtones. The wine is extremely balanced, with powerful berry flavors and is well structured.

Growing Conditions

Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, legendary proprietor of Château
Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. By combining the
great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families, the founders’ singular goal was
to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley.
Opus One, like any great work, arose out of passion. Dedicated to uncompromised quality,
Opus One’s sole purpose is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come.

In 1990, Napa Valley recorded a season of cool growing conditions and low crop yield, promising an outstanding wine. Cooler-than-normal winter weather led to a late bud break. Bloom and berry set were delayed by the season's conditions and rain in late May. Normal summer temperatures were followed by ideal harvest conditions.
