Spann Vineyards and winery, founded in 2001 by Betsy and Peter Spann, is in the Mayacamas Mountains of Glen Ellen. They produce unique grape variety blends, built on a European model of complexity, balance, full flavor and elegance. Their wines are enjoyable upon release but most will also improve with bottle age. “Enjoyable” is a key word because every wine and food experience should bring great enjoyment.; Betsy’s love of wine dates back to the late 1970s when she moved to Bordeaux with her parents. She returned to California to open a retail wine store, followed by co-founding Lake Sonoma Winery in 1985 and winemaking in South Africa. Meanwhile Peter was in New Orleans where he was introduced to wine while working in French restaurants, followed by stints in wine wholesale, wine marketing, an importing company handling wines from 11 different countries and winemaking internships at two Napa Valley wineries.; Drawing on their vast experience with top producers from around the world, Betsy and Peter believe that blending grape varieties and vineyard sites builds complex aromas and flavors and that wines match best with food when they have proper balance between fruit, acidity, alcohol, tannin and oak so that each component compliments rather than overpowers the others.
