Our wines are a reflection of our way of life and mission. We strive to be good stewards of the land with which we have been blessed for five generations. Our family vineyards and winery have been developed with the goal of producing premium wines which will carry the family name with pride and allow us to keep our family ranch for the generations to come. To that end, we produce fine wines in which we have the same pride as we have in our family and our family legacy.

The vineyards and winery are on 320 acres of hillsides in the heart of Adelaida. The climate and soils are perfect for producing premium grapes and our straw bale winery is a model sustainable production facility.

Zachary Raines was born and raised in the York Mountain area of Templeton California. His parents John and Kate Raines planted Cabernet, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir at what is now known as the Carver Ranch in 1984 which they would sell fruit to York Mountain Winery. Spending time in the vineyard and at the winery at an early age would foster in him a sense of nostalgia and passion for grapes and wine that would foster itself in ladder years. Fast forward many years and he would cut his teeth in the wine industry at 16 years old at Wild Horse Winery under the famed Kenny Volk working as a cellar tech after his older brother Jacob who also worked there got him a Harvest Job. He also briefly worked planting and maintaining vineyards around northern slo county with Jacob including the Dubost Estate Vineyard a new venture between Kate’s new husband Curt and Jacob on land owned by the Dubost in the Adelaida area of Paso Robles sines the late 1800’s. This would go on to be the site of the Straw Bale Winery that exist today. Around the same time as the Dubost conception with Jacob as winemaker for Dubost Zachary started working for the famed Adelaida cellars under Terry Culton working with the historical HMR Vineyard and some of the best vineyards in west Paso Robles. The all hands on approach would prepare him for all aspects of wine production from vineyard to bottle and his future roles as winemaker for Dubost after the sudden and tragic death of his brother Jacob in 2010 weeks before harvest. Since then Zachary has gone on to farm 20 acres for Dubost and achieve many awards, gold medals, and 90+ point wines, as well as growing production from 500 to 2500 cases and increasing quality along the way.

This is a really fun and interesting wine. Typically known as one of the major components of Port wine, it is the national grape of Portugal. Touriga is gaining much traction in the New World as a premium dry red wine as well as in Bordeaux where it is now on the list of accepted varietals to be blended with its more famous counterparts. This indeed did raise some eyebrows and lightbulbs on the potential of this wine. Originally planted in 1995 at the Glenrose Vineyard, its intent was always to be sold to producers of sweet Port-style wine. We are the first to produce a dry red wine off this vineyard and maybe in all of Paso, the proof is in the pudding. It is a delicious and unique wine.  A recent Gold Medal winner from the Orange County Wine Society.
