Growing Conditions
2019 is the best vintage that we have seen on the westside of Paso Robles in a decade! The season started with above average rainfall (33” at the MAHA, average is 26”). A cool windy spring made for a lighter than average set on most grapes, especially Grenache. Only one day reached 100 degrees with no real sustained heat spells. The long temperate growing season also allowed for sugar and acid to develop in unity. During times of extreme heat the sugars can accelerate at a higher rate than the precipitation of the acid. This made for near perfect ripening and maturation for the grapes until harvest.
Winemaking
Each lot was harvested separately and fermented in a selection of concrete and stainless steel with approximately 30% whole clusters. All lots were hand sorted and placed into tank for several days of cold soaking. A native yeast fermentation followed with light pump overs and daily tastings to analyze extraction and tannin for approximently 3 weeks. All were basket pressed at near dry upon the preferred level of tannin and extraction and barreled into a selection of French and Hungarian barriques (66% new) for 15 months.
Aging
We and You were so pleased with our first vintage of ‘3’ that we decided to do it again and boy are we glad! One barrel each from James Berry, Luna Matta, and Slide Hill have created this hedonistic elixer.
There have only been four single variety Villa Creek Syrah bottlings in the last 18 years and they have all been single vineyard selections. ‘3’ is a combination of grapes from west Paso Robles (G2 and Luna Matta) and coastal Syrah from Slide Hill Vineyard in Edna Valley. The Paso Robles grapes bring lush fruit and energy to the blend while the Edna Valley fruit softens the palate and contributes savory aromatics. In numerology 3’s tend to be artistic and have excellent social skills and are usually charming and attractive. These characteristics are apparent in this wine. The deep burgundy, almost black, color make this a very attractive wine in the glass. The combinations of bacon fat, cocoa and dark fruits lure you into the conversation and the palate turns on the charm with its complex layers of fresh dark berries, supple tannins and black pepper spice.
