A brief history

COME TASTE. UNWIND. APPRECIATE LIFE.

It’s easy to do when you’re at Autry Cellars. There is no glitzy tasting room, no expansive wrap-around wine bar made for hoards of shuttle bussed patrons. It’s just us, paying attention to you, in a comfortable and unassuming tasting room focused on the joys of wine appreciation. More often than not, it’s Steve Autry pouring at the tasting table, sharing the nuances of his award-winning wines and the story of their creation. It’s a sensory journey, an afternoon respite, and an education all in one.

Meet The Team

  • Steve Autry

A bass player in jazz and rock bands with past careers in aerospace research and technology, Steve combined his artistic talent with his scientific knowledge and became a full time artisan winemaker in 2001. Over the years his approach has confirmed what he long suspected – that the secret to great wines is rooted as much in science as it is in the traditional art of winemaking, both of which Steve approaches with tremendous dedication and passion.

Very limited production allows meticulously and personally caring for each wine, from the time grapes are harvested to the barrel tasting that signals a wine’s time has come. Autry’s award winning wines are indeed spectacular, as you’ll find on your very first visit…the gold, silver, and bronze medals lined up in Autry Cellars’ tasting room bear this out.

Autry Cellars Rosé: Group Improv Bottle Preview
Autry CellarsRosé: Group Improv

Each year’s Rosé is unique; like a solo, it’s different every time. Our 2021 blend is a beautiful, peachy rose-pink, the deeper color attributable to twenty-four hours of skin contact. This harmonious vintage feature equal amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Primitivo, and Cabernet Franc. Each variety is fermented separately and blended after fermentation is complete, just before bottling. In the resulting ensemble, each member rises and simultaneously embellishes the melody, a style known as group improvisation. You’ll note bright acidity with tastes of ripe strawberries, raspberries, and grapefruit. It ends with a dry finish and a hint of chocolate. Would pair well with scallops, white fish, pork loin, black forest cake or brownies. 60 cases produced. Grapes from multiple vineyards in San Luis Obispo County. Serves best at fifty-five degrees.
