Nose
Cumin and Black pepper spice along with charred Cedar and cigar box dominate the nose, a richer vanilla bean and raspberry jam bring a much needed sweetness that elucidates the fact that it IS from Paso. Glassy and saline red cherries and currants provide a sharp edge to the bouquet as well.
Palate
The charr of the nose is continued on the edges of the palate, but the core of the wine is rife with fruitful elegance in the form of Alpine strawberries and grapefruit syrup. The wine has plenty of staying power and some silky and long finishing tannins, but otherwise the wine is light on its feet and unapposing in a Muhammad Ali kind of way.
Growing Conditions
In 2019 we had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to share a block of Syrah with our friend Orion Stang at Bill Gibbs’ esteemed G2 Vineyard on Paso’s West side. Situated on a dramatically steep, Eastern facing slope of the vineyard, the wine has some finer edges with a bedrock opulence in the savory range of flavors.
Winemaking
We co-fermented about 5% Viognier with the Syrah to elevate the aromatics and richen the palate with sticky fruit, and utilized some of our favorite French Oak barrels that provide a smoky and toasty touch.
